Competition Get Intense with Gaming Notebooks
Monday 4 August 2008 @ 10:12 pm

The times where laptops for gaming were a specialist sector are vanishing very rapidly. Basically as I remember they were not really the best selling notebooks but being the most expensive they were the best cash generating products. They were the notebooks you constantly thought of but were out of your grasp. They were basically the best laptop computers that the technology was able to offer at that time. Having mentioned that the large number of us most likely did not buy laptop computers of this type because of the price. Well known companies have lately introduced their own gaming notebooks so its all changing as I say this.

I reckon they would class it as a high grade product and make a lot of profit on these particularly with their economies of scale. With laptop computers being classed like commodities this is a good profit channel for them. Local retailers can’t compete with them in convincing people to buy laptop computers. I believe smaller retailers are very unhinged regarding this. Now consumers will have increased options it makes it arduous for the small resellers. Big manufacturers can utilize their brand names to easily win consumers over.

With that these systems are in addition considered to be the best laptop computers already, even if they really are not. Still however, for the local resellers this may turn out to be positive. Consumers like to be able to customise because they can choose what’s most important to their requirements. These types of people generally are well educated in the technology and will compare spec for spec. If you’re buying the laptop for gaming then certainly the performance is the first concern. This would be viewed as a beneficial trend for the gamer. Fresh technology will be accessible to everyone when prices are pushed lower. Don’t hold me to that however because other things could take place in the notebook computer industry. Brand new notebooks are continuously coming out and these latest systems always ask for premium prices. Strong Competition usually forces companies to design better products and provide greater value so that sounds promising.

Electronic Media: Copying For Preservation
Thursday 3 July 2008 @ 1:46 am

You’ve spend most of your young adult life recording every single episode of Seinfeld and Sex in the City - now you wish you’d waited until recordable DVDs had come out. Or your grandmother left you boxes of pictures and even old reel-to-reel movies, all crumbling and disintegrating, and you’d love to be able to copy them to a CD or a DVD. Or you want to take those family memories and share a copy with each of your eight daughters. How do you get your information and images from the closets and boxes of life into new electronic media?

First you have to understand the limitations. There’s only so much one can do with crumbling tapes and disintegrating images. A picture that’s faded - is never going to be in its original color. You can only capture what’s there right now. And if your tapes pop and scratch, you’ll have a recording on DVD or CD that pops and scratches too. Also, there’s a difference between analog media, like tapes, and digital media; when you transfer from one to the other, you’re going to see some quality issues.

Second, you have to understand your equipment needs. You will have to have a good computer, first and foremost, and preferably one that has lots of hard drive space so you can store your images, sounds, and moving images until they can be transferred to a more appropriate medium. When you purchase your computer, make sure it’s a multimedia computer. This ensures that it will have the right hookups for tape transferal. It will need a video hookup (that’s the three plugs in red, yellow, and white) to transfer VCR data, and you’ll need to purchase a scanner for those pictures. A DVD burner will be of the utmost necessity, preferably one that also burns standard CDs. Remote backup of your data is a good idea as well; for that, you should have a good high-speed hookup for your computer.

Now go out and study copyright law. You need to understand that some of what you’re doing may be construed as illegal one day, judging by the way court cases are going. The FBI warning that comes up at the beginning of every recorded movie warning against public showings or illegal copying is a very serious thing these days. When you copy copyright-protected materials, it is your responsibility to ensure that you are making them for your personal use only. Don’t do what some are doing, and copy the game, CD, or DVD before selling it secondhand; this is blatantly illegal and at some point it’s going to catch up with them.

Another piece of hardware may be necessary if you’re copying video games for your kids. It’s a good idea to make these copies for pre-teen children because of the damage they can do to CDs and DVDs; but you will need a special plug-in adapter for your video game console. In addition, you should be ready for a steep learning curve. It’s much harder to copy disk-based games than it is to copy movies or music. Remember, games are designed by programmers; the best copyblock programs are going to be found here, not on a movie. You will have to purchase special software and learn it in order to circumvent the copy blocks.

When you do have all the necessary equipment and knowledge, it should not be hard to copy anything you want into any medium, provided that medium has enough room. And you can do some really neat things as you copy them. For instance, you can edit out all the commercials in that 7-year run of Seinfeld. It may take you months, but ultimately you’ll have a perfect copy of all the episodes. Or maybe you want to turn your old pictures into a slide show, with sound, text, and voiceovers. With a good presentation program, you can do that. Disks like this make excellent anniversary presents, Christmas greetings, or engagement gifts to welcome new members of the family.

You can take old family movies and give them soundtracks if you like; or you can print all your grandma’s old pictures onto T-shirts to give away at the holidays. Really, once you have digitized your data and images, you have no limitations to what you can do to it except for your own imagination.

In the last decade, electronic media, computing advances, and the Internet have transformed our lives. They will continue transforming them for the foreseeable future. And media will also continue changing. If you make digitized copies of your memories, your media, and your information, you can ensure that they are preserved for the future. And by learning about the advances coming down the pike, you can prepare for future developments; for instance, smell technology is available for web designers these days. Wouldn’t it be neat to be able to record the smell of Mom’s apple pie, or of your favorite perfume, and play it back someday in the future? Smell, after all, is the sense most closely related to memory.

But for now, use your skills with electronic media copying to enhance your current media collection, preserve memories for the future, and show people how much they mean to you by giving them gifts of memories and love. Technology is just another tool that you can use to make your life and the lives of those you love better. Use it.

How Soon Before We See Slim And Light Gaming Notebooks
Wednesday 25 June 2008 @ 5:13 am

The portable computer market has gone from strength to strength recently. Those searching for the latest intel centrino 2 offerings could be kept waiting as manufacturers have given warning of potential delivery shortages. Its actually incredible that financial issues and all haven’t hindered this demand for laptop computers either. Manufacturers are trying to structure the technology loops but that doesn’t hinder anybody from arriving and bettering things.

With all the latest breakthroughs in technology gaming laptops have benefitted a great amount in my opinion. Prices are also slipping because the rate at which technology becomes old has become so small for laptop computers. The performance of gaming laptops has greatly enhanced and its really a viable means of gaming. Past problems with big, over heating laptops for gaming are fading away and new thinner, attractive models are coming out. Still there is a vast difference between the performance of notebooks and desktop pcs however desktops are more roomy to allow for ample cooling and such things that all help. I do not give it too long before we see ultra light gaming laptops on the market.

Speaking of gaming laptops, the vast choice are attainable when they are custom built. I’m partial to the notion that high quality parts go into some custom laptops. With that in perspective you commonly get to configure the cpu, memory, hard disk and software. Mass market laptops aren’t made with particular buyers in mind and this could raise a problem. You get by this by buying a laptop built to . There are plenty of small system resellers about that give super service. To some buyers this is very significant.

Next gen notebooks do seem like a tantalising option. The latest trend along with those mentioned looks to be inexpensive umpc’s. Its ridiculous how products developed for the 3rd world countries have become hyped in the first world nations. People desire laptops that are weightless but also big enough to be functional and user friendly. I’m sure that companies already have their designs made up. It would hardly surprise me to see ultra light gaming laptops in the next 5 years time. There’s no knowing what products we’ll see but surely there will be many.

The Help Desk
Wednesday 18 June 2008 @ 8:43 pm

When you think of a help desk, what do you picture? Do you see a large desk with an elderly woman sitting behind it pencil behind the ear? Maybe it has a computer or two? Of course the person is smiling, but you know it’s not going to be much help to talk to them. Now, transform this image to the computer help desk. Now, erase those images and focus on the computers. The help desks of the internet are much more computer powered and, as it should be, helpful!

A help desk is found throughout the internet on websites that require your input. Web merchants have them. Websites with message boards often have them. Their main point is to allow you the opportunity gather the information you need to finish your task. Let’s say that you are in need of a password for a website. If there is an icon labeled help desk, you can click on it. You may have to do a search for the topic you need. You may have to browse through a list of frequently asked questions. But, often it will take you to a web page that you can send an email to the actual help desk. That “desk” is a contact that can answer your question for you. While it is not an immediate response, it can be responded to within a day or so. Some websites offer help desks that move much quicker, others slower.

The point of a help desk is to allow the user to communicate with the owner of a website. It serves as a way to ask questions and get information. The help desk is such a great tool on websites because of this. To find out if a website has a help desk, you can simply look on the home page for a link to it. Usually this tends to be near the bottom of the page or at the very top. The next time you need some help, try utilizing the help desk feature!

Boost PC Performace in Seven Easy Steps
Saturday 3 May 2008 @ 5:55 pm

Many people wonder why their computer seems to get slower and slower as time passes. Just like a car, a computer needs routine maintenance to continue running properly. Here are several steps to get your system back in order.

Check Your Hard Drive for free space
If you are running out of storage space, your computer will definitely slow down. You can simply double click My Computer, right click your hard drive, and select properties to view your used space and free space. If you are running low on space, now is the time to delete any old programs you no longer need.

Uninstall Old Programs
Click your start button, then head to Control Panel- Add/Remove Programs. Here you will see a list of programs that are installed on your machine. Read through the list and uninstall any programs you no longer need. If you aren’t sure what something is, it is best to leave it for now. You can use an internet search engine to find out about it later.

Clean Out your Web Browser’s Cache
Many people fail to realize their browser usually keeps a record of the sites that they visit daily. You may want to get rid of this for several reasons. For the purpose of this article, we want to get rid of all the temporary files, history and cookies. You need to know beforehand that a full clean-up may get rid of some of your saved usernames for specific sites. Internet Explorer users should click, Tools, Internet Options, and the General Tab(Default). Here you can delete your cookies, delete your temporary files, and clear your history.

Scan your computer for Spyware and Adware
This is by far the most common problem I encounter. If you constantly get pop-up windows from sites you have never visited, you may be infected. Spyware and Adware are programs installed on your computer that track the sites you visit and send you unsolicited ads related to your frequently visited sites. You should download two programs to remove these programs; Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware. You can find both of these programs by visiting www.download.com and searching for their names. After downloading and installing the programs, make sure you run them. You may be surprised by what is installed on your computer without your consent.

Update and Run Your Virus Scan Software
Make sure you have virus scan software on your computer. If you don’t, McAfee offers a free program you can use over the net. Visit http://www.mcafee.com and click “Home and Home Office”. If you already have virus scanning software, update it, and run a full check
periodically.

Run Scandisk
Double-click your My Computer icon on the desktop. From their, right click your hard drive(c: is the default), select Properties, then select the Tool tab. Now you need to select Check Now in the error checking section. Once you click “Check Now” a small window will pop-up. Check the “Automatically fix the system errors” box and hit the Start button. Follow the instructions your system gives you from this point.

Run Disk Defragmenter
This is by far the longest step in this article. I suggest you perform this procedure last. It may be best for you to let this program run overnight or while you are at work. Over time, the information on your hard drive may become fragmented. Imagine being assigned a file clerk position at your job.

Would it be faster and easier if the files you need to sort/retrieve are all in one location and alphabetized? Or, would it be easier for you to randomly look for the files all over the office?

Sometimes your computer needs to “look for files all over the office”. Defragmenting your hard drive will correct this problem. To run this program, double click My Computer, and right click your hard drive (c: is the default) and select Properties. From the Properties window, select the Tools tab and click Defragment Now. You can also click the Start Button- Programs- Accessories- System Tools. Make sure you run ScanDisk before you run Disk Defragmenter.

There may be errors on your hard drive that need to be fixed before you defragment. I would hate for you to run this program, head to work, and find out the program stopped on its own once you get home.

These are just a few things that you can do to boost your PC performance. If you would like further tips and tricks, visit www.24-7computers.com.

Why Appoint Any Technical Writing Services?
Sunday 13 April 2008 @ 5:42 pm

The exactness of an organization’s technical documentation will
definitely be an asset to the company. Since it’s a trustworthy
resource on how to use the product of the company, it’ll benefit
the company and its customers. In fact bad user manuals are
frustrating and can alienate customers. However in contrast,
good technical documentation has real benefits. Also, clear
reference materials can reduce customer errors and make the
business processes more reliable.

So, in the present world of complicated gadgets, technical
documentations require more than just writing. But sadly, IT
departments don’t have the information design skills required
for good technical documentation. But you can make your
technical documentation clear and to the point by availing
technical writing services. Technical writing services can also
help you with any large amounts of unstructured information and
help you better demonstrate the image of your product and
organization. There are countless technical writing services
that do have these skills, and they offer these skills to anyone
in the organization that needs help with large amounts of
unstructured information.

These technical writing services offered by many companies can
make an operator’s manual understandable to the common person.
These technical writing services can at the very least identify
the audience that the manual is intended for and use the
terminology that that audience is familiar with. Technical
writing services are useful in cases where there is a need for
straightforward, easy to use information.

Technical writing services can develop technical documentations,
such as equipment manuals, appendixes, or operating and
maintenance instructions, catalogs, parts lists, assembly
instructions, sales promotion materials, and project proposals.
In fact, many technical documentation-writing services writers
work with engineers on technical subject matters and help in
preparing written interpretations of engineering and design
specifications and other information for the laymen readership.

Technical writing services are useful for companies that need
help with organizing, writing or delivering their policies and
procedures in easily understandable language. These services are
especially sought out by software developers who’re scared of
losing their customers. They’re ideal for those companies that
don’t want to support technical writers but instead prefer to
hire the services of technical writers as and when required.

Practical Uses for GPS Technology
Sunday 30 March 2008 @ 6:43 pm

Since the US Department of Defense established the worldwide
Global Positioning System (GPS) network, it has been put to a
very wide variety of uses by governments, corporations,
organizations, and individuals alike.

It has been put to good use for many years in its original, and
most obvious, purpose of coordinating military operations. In
fact, if it weren’t for GPS, many modern military operations and
practices would simply not be possible. It is also frequently
used in search-and-rescue missions as well as disaster relief
efforts.

In addition to this, GPS technology has proven to be
instrumental in numerous scientific research expeditions,
especially in very remote regions such as mountain ranges and
the north and south poles.

The other side of GPS functionality, which is sometimes
forgotten, is the many uses it can be put to by individual
consumers. GPS
handhelds and other GPS devices are available
for sale through many ordinary retail channels, and can be very
useful for a variety recreational purposes. For example, having
a GPS device handy when camping, hiking, hunting, fishing, or
boating can be an excellent way to ensure that you don’t get
lost, even if you somehow manage to wander off course.

Another common consumer use of GPS technology is for safety
security purposes. Using a GPS
tracking system can be an excellent way to combat crimes
such as theft and kidnapping.

Wireless Linux: Using the Linux Wireless ToolBox
Friday 21 March 2008 @ 8:49 am

First thing you need to do is purchase a wireless adapter card with a prism2 chipset. Just go to google and type in linux wireless adapters and track one down.

If you are using a fairly good wireless distro it should pick up the card automatically.

Ok, Now you have the card now what, you plugged it in and look to the bottom write where the Windows XP wireless Icon usually is and find nothing.

There is no Zero config utility with linux, but they do have built in tools to help connect to wireless networks.

Now you need to find the Command line terminal, it usually looks like a window with a shell because it is a shell.

Now let’s test to see if you have your card working. Type in iwlist at the command prompt. If it doesn’t let you, then you might have enter administrator mode.

You can enter administrator mode by typing su at the command prompt. Then you will be asked for the administrator password.

Now type in iwlist at the command prompt. This will give you a ton of tools to work with. Once you have typed in iwlist and nothing happens then you probably don’t have the right card or it’s configured wrong.

Check and make sure you don’t have any other wireless network adapters active and disable them if they are. Also make sure that your wireless adapter is set to start up at boot time. You need to look for your system utilities area..it’s like the Microsoft control panel called Yast.

By the way your wireless adapter should be named wlan0

The iwlist command will give a list of options that look like this:
usage: iwlist [interface] scanning

[interface] frequency

[interface] channel

[interface] bitrate

[interface] rate

[interface] encryption

[interface] key

[interface] power

[interface] txpower

[interface] retry

[interface] ap

[interface] accesspoints

[interface] peers

[interface] event

All of these options can give you various detailed information about surrounding wireless networks.

If you type in iwist scanning it will give a out of all wireless networks available to you with an output like this:

wlan0 Scan completed :

Cell 01 - Address: 00:14:BF:75:31:FD

ESSID:”Len”

Mode:Managed

Frequency:2.462 GHz (Channel 11)

Quality:2/94 Signal level:-84 dBm Noise level:-154 dBm

Encryption key:on

Bit Rate:1 Mb/s

Bit Rate:2 Mb/s

Bit Rate:5.5 Mb/s

Bit Rate:11 Mb/s

Bit Rate:18 Mb/s

Bit Rate:24 Mb/s

Bit Rate:36 Mb/s

Bit Rate:54 Mb/s

Bit Rate:6 Mb/s

Bit Rate:9 Mb/s

Bit Rate:12 Mb/s

Bit Rate:48 Mb/s

Extra:bcn_int=100

This gives you the Network Name, MAC address, Frequency, encryption and much more. This information can be used to join your preferred network.

If you are monitoring certain access point you can type in iwlist accesspoints and get the listing of each nearby access point with the MAC address.

Once you have located the access point you want to connect with it’ time to start using another command called iwconfig.

iwconfig is used to configure your wireless adapter so you can connect it to your preferred network. You can configure every thing from the ESSID to the transmit power of your wireless adapter.

sYNOPSIS

iwconfig [interface]

iwconfig interface [essid X] [nwid N] [freq F] [channel C]

[sens S] [mode M] [ap A] [nick NN]

[rate R] [rts RT] [frag FT] [txpower T]

[enc E] [key K] [power P] [retry R]

[commit]

The syntax for using the iwconfig command is: iwconfig (interface name) then what ever you want to configure. So if you want to configure the ESSID you would type iwconfig wlan0 essid “network name”.

Now that you know that the tools are there go to work!!!
