Manhattan is the heartbeat of New York City and has become one and the same with the city as a whole. The island of Manhattan itself is home to Times Square, as well as a number of artistic and cultural focal points. The Island of Manhattan can be roughly broken up into Downtown, Midtown and Uptown areas, each of which feature a number of outstanding points of interest.
Positioned to the south of 14th Street, Downtown Manhattan is the setting of the Financial District which runs along Wall Street, including the rebuilt World Trade Center and Battery Park, from which you can reach the Statue of Liberty by ferryboat. Numerous admired cultural areas downtown, including Greenwich Village Tribeca and Soho feature significant architecture, trendy dining and plenty of shopping. Another popular target downtown is Manhattan, which runs along Canal Street.
Midtown is positioned between 14th Street and Central Park, and is home to a major arts scene. The center|core|axis|hub|heart} of arts life in the metropolitan area is the Theater District which encompasses Broadway, Times Square and Hell’s Kitchen, as well as the Madame Tussaud’s. The Midtown area is a convenient location for visitors to stay as there are various hotels in New York in the section. Other popular areas include Gramercy Flat Iron, a hip residential district, as well as the fashion obsessed Chelsea District.
Large amounts of real estate controlled by Central Park, Upper Manhattan the location of the Tisch Children’s Zoo, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and several museums throughout the Upper East and West side. Furthermore, the district is the location of Columbia University in Morningside Heights, the significant Harlem neighborhood and Washington Heights.
Every one of Manhattan’s distinctive districts maintain their own sense of history, as well as trendy points of interest from top-notch arts to eats. A visit to New York is not complete without a extensive tour of Manhattan’s best spots. There is an excellent reason that Manhattan has come to characterize the public face of the city. Manhattan is one of the world’s greatest cultural capitals and continues to set the standard in commercial and metropolitan trends.
Bahamas is one of the favorite, hot and evergreen tourist spot. The charisma and the aura of the place are spell- binding. It seems that nature has given it all to this place with its 15 superb and exclusive islands, beaches, and the lovely Bahamians. The two well known islands of this place are-The Out Island and the Nassau or Paradise Island. The Nassau is also the capital of Bahamas. The Out islands are a bunch of several islands like- the Abacos, the Acklins also known as the Crooked Island, the Andros, etc. then there are also breathtaking Brry islands, Bimni, Cat Island with the amazing landscapes, the Exumas famous for scuba dive, fish and the like. The rare West Indian Flamingos can be a treat to the eyes at the Inagua islands; the pulse of romance can be aggravated at the calm, quiet yet beautiful Mayaguana islands. They are amiable, gentle and generous people who are too social and fun loving.

Shanghai China’s Xiang Yang market is one of the favorite tourist shopping stops in Shanghai. The Xiang Yang market offers both tourists and locals the opportunity to shop for many types of famous brand knock-off products at bargain prices. It helps to understand the customs and practices of shopping at Shanghai Xiang Yang and most of the rest of China
before embarking on this adventure.
Shanghai’s Xiang Yang market is located in the central shopping district of Shanghai making it easy to find. It is on HuaHai Central Road, one of two main shopping streets in Shanghai, near the intersection with ShanXi South Road. The Xiang Yang market can be easily reached by taxi, or from the Shanghai subway line 1, getting off at the Shan Xi Nan Lu stop. Walk west on HuaHai Road about 1/2 block and follow the crowd into the market.
Upon entering the market, visitors will be approached by hawkers offering watches, DVDs, purses, etc. Pass them by and continue into the main part of the Xiang Yang market where there are hundreds of small booths offering products of all varieties. Included are shirts, ties, watches, sunglasses, golf clubs, jackets, coats, backpacks, ladies handbags and a wide assortment of other items.
If asked, the clothing vendors will usually tell you that the products are genuine and overruns from the China factories. In most instances this is not true and the products are copies of the real thing. If you don’t care and realize what you are buying, there are good bargains to be found.
Price haggling is the norm and is expected in Xiang Yang market as in most places in China. Initial price offerings to foreigners will be 3-4 times the local price, but many still consider it a good deal and pay anyway. The best advice is to offer no more than 15-20 per cent of the first offered price and gradually negotiate up to no more than 30-35 percent, depending on how badly you want it. At that point, start to walk away and your offer will likely be accepted.
In Chinese price bargaining, if you offer a price and it is acccepted, it is considered extremely poor form to then change your mind and either decline the purchase, or start bargaining again. A deal is a deal.
The Shanghai Xiang Yang market is very crowded and the only danger is that of occasional pickpockets. Secure your valuables as you would in any other crowded urban surrounding.
Xiang Yang market shopping is one of the “must dos” for visitors to Shanghai and is a good way to spend a half day before returning home.

As an airline pilot, I “live” out of my suitcase quite a bit.
Crewmembers are very hard on their luggage and won’t tolerate junky luggage that won’t perform well over a long period of time. The best value in luggage is good quality, well-built, highly functional luggage that is backed up with a strong waranty. You’ll achieve the best value if something serves you well for a long period of time. That way your cost per use will be low.
This eliminates most of the cheaper discount store luggage. Surprisingly, it also eliminates many of the fancy, high priced “designer” bags also.
I’ve carefully inspected many designer bags offered in the boutique designer logo shops. Often these bags have the quality and features of the cheap ones in the discount stores. Their only value is the “perceived value” of the designer logo.
I’ve been shocked to find the prices of these bags well over $1000 while they are inferior in quality, duraility, and features of many suitcases costing around $200-$300.
There are only a few brands that I specifically recommend. More on that in a moment.
The following “checklist” for choosing your luggage should help you make a good purchase decision.
Pilot Paul’s Luggage Buying Checklist:
Wheels. These are essential. Think about how much walking with your bags is involved in any trip. It is best to have at least one bag in your ensemble with wheels. The ideal situation is to arrange things so with one wheeled bag acting as a cart, you can be completely mobile with your entire luggage. This will save you lots of time waiting for porters and bellmen, plus tip money.
I highly recommend larger, rubberized wheels with ball bearings- similar to the ones on inline skates. These make a noticeable difference when pulling a loaded bag. They give the best performance and longevity.
Recessed wheels are less likely to be damaged. Often, while doing aircraft exterior inspections, I’ll find suitcase wheels that have been broken off in the loading/unloading process.
Handle. Make sure that it is long enough. If it’s too short, you’ll be leaning sideways while walking.
Make sure that the handle locks down so it won’t be damaged if you check your bag.
One thing that leads to handle failures on many bags is lifting a loaded bag by the pull handle. Your bag will last longer if you lift it by the smaller grip handles.
For larger bags, two grip handles make it much easier to hoist, lift, and carry your bag. Think of getting the bag out of a trunk of up into an overhead bin.
Outer Shell. There are three different types: soft-sided, hard-sided, and in-between, semi-soft sided. Consider your needs.
Soft-sided are the most lightweight and expandable. They make the best carry-ons, but your bag’s contents are most vulnerable to damage. Think about what you’ll pack in one, especially if you plan to check your bag.
Hard-sided bags are the best for protecting your stuff, but these bags tend to be heavier. They also don’t give or compress if you’re trying to stuff them in a tight place, like the trunk of a car or an overhead bin.
Semi-soft combines the benefits of the other two. These are what I like best. They are partially framed and have expandable tops and bottoms. They weigh less than hard-sided ones, but still protect well.
Material. For soft and semi-soft luggage, nylon or ballistic nylon is stronger than polyester. Look for a tight and dense weave. If denier is mentioned, it refers to the thickness of the fiber. High denier means thick fiber.
Zippers. Metal ones aren’t good. The newer, synthetic zippers made of coils can actually self-repair when the slide is moved over the teeth.
Self-repairing zippers is one thing that separates the well-made luggage from the rest.
Since people tend to over-stuff their suitcases (especially if they did some extra shopping), the zipper takes the strain of trying to close and hold the suitcase together.
These self-repairing zippers will do that job better than any others will. A standard zipper can fail under that strain. If your suitcase zipper breaks as you are finishing packing and hurrying to catch a plane, you suddenly have a big problem.
There you are, it’s time to go and your suitcase zipper is broken. Everything is falling out and you don’t have the time or capability to fix or replace it.
Whatever you buy, make sure that it has a large, self-repairing zipper.
Hooks. Many rolling bags have a hook to carry an additional bag. These are wonderful. With these, you can often easily carry two extra bags - one on the hook and one over the extended handle. The bag on the hook tends to counter-balance everything making the downward load on the handle lighter.
Tip - some hooks are stronger than others are. The most strain on your luggage hook comes when you have a heavy bag attached and you are on an escalator. The hooked bag is unsupported. If this is an issue, look for the elevator.
Other Nice Features. Many pockets inside and out are useful. Many bags have some plastic lined pockets. These are great for wet items like swimsuits or workout clothes. If you are getting a bag that will be outside like a backpack, rain flaps over the zippers help keep the contents dry when it’s raining.
Warranty. If you buy a good suitcase and use it for a long time, a good warranty is very important.
A long warranty period is a good indication that the manufacturer believes in their product.
Many higher-end bags have lifetime warranties. While these suitcases may cost a bit more, if a free warranty repair is the difference between more years of service and the garbage, it’s worth it.
The smart choice is to buy well-constructed, long-lasting quality luggage. That will be the best value, last the longest, and be the wisest choice.
There are four specific brand of luggage that I personally recommend.

I would just like to explain the reason we decided to write the word Grown Ups in inverted comma’s. It is simply because the majority of us are still children at heart. Ok, maybe we have jobs, driving licenses, responsibilities and wrinkles, even children of our own, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t like a good party!!
First things first; what does the Birthday person like to do? If you are organizing a bash for your Gran’s 90th, a Bucking Bronco may not be the top of her entertainment wish list, however watching a close up Magician, having her caricature drawn or swooning over a Rod Stewart look-a-like may be more to her liking.
Murder Mystery Nights, Race Evenings or a Casino Night are usually brilliantly organized events, and enable everyone to don their glad-rags and mingle with other people. Music is always a good way to get your guests smiling and socializing, and the choices offered are limitless; from good old Discos or Karaoke through to the more sophisticated Pipers and Harpists. You could let your choice of music flow into the theme and atmosphere of your evening, for example, by having a Country & Western Band playing and asking your guests to dress appropriately for an evening of ‘boot-scooting’. For real die-hard music lovers, there are some fabulous tribute bands about, or bands who chose to only play music from a specific generation. Personally, I don’t know many people who have turned down an invite to a 70’s party….. any excuse to wear a wig, paisley waistcoat and flares.
Obviously, at any ‘Grown Up’ Party, there must be a constant supply of cool beverages; and don’t forget soft drinks for the designated drivers and under 18’s. If your venue doesn’t have a Bar, Mobile Bars could be your answer. Some Caterers will include beverages as part of their package, always ask for a breakdown of their quotation. Will they provide table linens and crockery, or is your venue primed to supply these items, or do you need to source them separately? If your venue is a Restaurant or Hotel, will they charge a corkage fee if you choose to supply your own bubbly? If you are using a Hotel or Function Rooms in a Conference Centre as your venue, can they offer a special discount on rooms for your Guests? It is always worth asking!
Birthday Presents for ‘Grown Up’ Boys and ‘Grown Up’ Girls can be difficult to choose. After all, as an adult, they can usually buy what they want/need thus giving the unanswerable question of “What do we give to the person who has everything?”. Small novelties and jokes are always fun to exchange, and there are many such novelties in the strictly adult only 18+ gift section. One idea is to club together with friends, or if indeed you are the birthday person, to ask your friends to club together to buy a Day Out - such as 4×4 driving, a paint-balling, a spa pamper day, or indeed no gifts at all but instead a charity donation. Oxfam, www.oxfamunwrapped.com, have a brilliant site where you can buy a goat, donkey, safe water or a toilet for those in need.
You may want to show a slide show of home photographs ‘through the ages’, and thus need relevant projectors etc…. You may wish to permanently record the event for future bribery or even to view at a later date, in which case you may wish to search for a photographer or videographer….. One thing that people do tend to overlook is the morning after. It’s never a good idea to be hovering and sweeping with a hangover, book someone else to take care of the cleaning for you!
Why not end the evening with a bang - firework displays are simply stunning and unforgettable, or for those with noise limitations, a laser show can be equally as effective. Don’t forget the little extra’s you may want as keepsakes…for example printed t-shirts depicting the face of the Birthday Celebrity…. And don’t forget Thank You notes!
If all else fails, and you feel completely overwhelmed by the options that are laid out in front of you, take the easy road…………. Hire a Party Planner!

Over the coming week, I hope to lead you on a journey of discovery and adventure. Briefly taking a glimpse into a past so horrid. Of haunting tales and ghastly ends that awaited so many of her most famous occupants. Firing your imagination, so that you will delve deeper into her history for yourselves.
During her long and illustrious 900 years, The Tower of London has developed into one of the most haunted places in Britain. She has been home to beheadings and murders, torture and hangings, as well as being a prison to Queens and Nobles alike.
Thomas A. Becket is “the first reported sighting of a ghost at the Tower of London.”
During the construction on the Inner Curtain Wall in the 13th century, Thomas appeared apparently unhappy about the construction, and it is said he reduced the wall to rubble with a strike of his cross. Henry III’s grandfather was responsible for the death of Thomas Becket, so Henry III wasted no time building a chapel in the Tower of London, naming it for the archbishop.
This must have pleased Thomas’ ghost because there were no further interruptions during the construction of the wall.
The Bloody Tower was the scene of the infamous disappearance of the two princes; Edward V (12) and Richard Duke of York (10), who are thought to have been murdered in 1483 on the probable command of the Duke of Gloucestershire, who was to be crowned Richard the III.
According to one story, guards in the late 15th century, who were passing the Bloody Tower, spotted the shadows of two small figures gliding down the stairs still wearing the white night shirts they had on the night they disappeared.
They stood silently, hand in hand, before fading back into the stones of the Bloody Tower.
These figures were identified as the ghosts of the two princes. In 1674 workmen found a chest that contained the skeletons of two young children, they were thought to be the remains of the princess, and were given a royal burial not long afterwards.
The story of the little princes is still to this day a heartbreaking story. They are “among the most poignant ghosts” in the Tower of London.
The most persistent ghost in The Tower of London is the ghost of Queen Anne Boleyn.
The King, Henry VIII, after learning the baby she carried for nine months was a boy and still born, accused by her of infidelity.
She was taken to TOWER GREEN and was beheaded on May 19, 1536.
Queen Anne appears near the Queen’s House, close to the site where her execution was carried out. She can be seen leading a ghostly procession of Lords and Ladies down the aisle of the Chapel Royal of St. Peter ad Vincula.
She floats down the aisle to her final resting place. Queen Anne is buried under the Chapel’s altar. Her headless body has also been seen walking the corridors of the Tower.
Sir Walter Raleigh lived quite comfortable compared to others who were imprisoned within the walls of the Bloody Tower.
His “rooms” are still furnished as they were in the 16th century, and can be seen when visiting the Tower today.
He was executed by James I, and has been seen looking exactly as he does in his portrait hanging in the Bloody Tower.
I hope you have enjoyed Pt1 to The Ghosts of The Tower of London. In Pt2 we discover what happend to Catherine Howard and Lady Jane Grey as well as the Horrific end to the Countess of Salisbury.
If these tales have brought your imagination back to life and you want to discover more ghostly and gruesome stories of times past. Then pay a visit to my Haunted Castles page where you can find out about the grisly goings on at Windsor Castle or read about the Heroic tale of the Two Brothers of Berry Pomeroy Castle in Devon.
Best wishes and have a great day!
