Shufflemaster
Monday 15 September 2008 @ 3:04 pm

Apparently, more and more online casino are using automated shufflers than the skilled hands of their poker dealers.

Shufflemaster, a Las Vegas-based distributor of table games and table games-related products, continues to increase its profits.

Shuffle Master said Tuesday its net income for the quarter ended July 31 was almost $3 million, compared with $2.7 million a year ago.

Revenues rose 9.8 percent to $49.5 million from $45.1 million.

“In three months time, we committed to a refinancing solution and successfully executed it thereby strengthening the balance sheet,” Shuffle Master Chief Executive Officer Mark Yoseloff said, according to Las Vegas Gaming Wire. “We will now turn our attention to cost control and expense reduction.”

Company executives said Shuffle Master is moving away from direct sales of its products toward a business model that focuses on leasing the equipment to casinos.

I know blackjack players for years have railed against multiple-deck shufflers, and recently more casinos have done back to single deck shufflers, or dealer shuffling, at blackjack games to attracts more gamblers.

Shuffling isn’t such a big issue in poker, where there is no card counting, but there’s something refreshing about seeing a dealer shuffle with his hands, rather than use a machine.

Online Poker Essentials
Thursday 14 August 2008 @ 2:12 pm

If you’re a regular online poker player like me, there are certain essentials that are required to ensure maximum online poker pleasure. Let’s start with the quintessential basics first so you can get a good start to the world of online poker .

First off, any online poker player needs a comfortable chair, preferably one that reclines so that you need not strain your back. Come to think of it, even with a strained back you can most likely still play online poker. Secondly, if you do not have an optical mouse by this point, you are missing out. Those old school mice with rolling balls are less efficient than optical mice that do not have to rely on the ball movement. With an optical mouse, you will never miss your chance to click away at online poker whether it is to go all-in or raise your opponents. Light music playing in the background while you are analyzing your poker hand and calculating your odds is also a recommended asset for your total online poker playing experience. Most importantly, do not forget to bring in the ice cold drinks with your favorite snack food so you will be sufficiently nourished for hours of continuous online poker play.

FreeCell Solitaire - A Winning Strategy
Sunday 2 March 2008 @ 7:57 pm

FreeCell Solitaire is an extremely addictive solitaire card game invented by Paul Alfille. It is fun and very skill-dependent.

Nearly every game of FreeCell Solitaire can be won with perfect play. Only several FreeCell deals are known to be unsolvable. This makes FreeCell card game much more interesting and popular than solitaire variations like Klondike, where luck is a large factor in the game. With FreeCell, winning depends mostly on skill.

You have a better chance of winning if you plan your strategy carefully. Below you will find several simple rules that can help you to win FreeCell Solitaire on more regular basis..

1. Examine the tableau carefully before making any moves. It is very important to plan several moves ahead. The obvious moves are not always the best.

2. Make it a priority to free up all the Aces, especially if they are deeply buried behind the higher cards. Move them to the home cells as early as possible.

3. Try to keep as many free cells empty as possible. Be cautious! Once all free cells are filled, you have almost no space to maneuver. And your ability to maneuver is the key to this game. Make sure you have no alternative before placing any cards in the free cells.

4. Try to create an empty tableau pile as soon as possible. Empty tableau piles are more important than free cells. Each empty tableau can be used to store an entire sequence instead of a single card. And it doubles the length of an ordered sequence of cards that can be moved from one tableau to another. (If the long sequence move involves both empty tableaus and free cells, it is often called supermove.)

5. If it is possible, fill an empty tableau space with a long descending sequence that begins with a King.

6. Do not to move cards to the home cells too quickly. You may need these cards later to maneuver lower cards of other suits.

Some FreeCell Solitaire deals are solvable very quickly, while others take more time to solve. Replaying the same shuffles in a number of different ways will allow completing the most difficult ones. The more you play the more games you are able to complete. Continue to practice using the strategy above and soon you will find yourself achieving better results and enhancing your enjoyment of playing FreeCell Solitaire.

Boris Sandberg is a developer of the BVS Solitaire Collection, a collection of about 400 different solitaire card games, including FreeCell Solitaire, Spider Solitaire, Pyramid and Golf.

Sukoku
Tuesday 18 December 2007 @ 1:17 am

Sudoku has become one of the most popular puzzle games of all times. It is an old puzzle that has been around forever. However it has recently been marketed as Sudoku and is being done by everyone. In fact I was recently on a plane and an entire row of passengers were all doing Sudoku puzzles.

This past year a combination of five Sudoku puzzle books combined to out sell one of the big best selling books in the book marketplace. Almost every daily newspaper now features a Suduko puzzle right next to it’s customary crossword puzzle. Often times, the Sudoku puzzle gets attention before the traditional crossword puzzle.

Sudoku is a puzzle made up of nine cubes featuring nine squares in each cube. These nine cubes combine to make nine rows and nine columns. The puzzle game is sometimes referred to as nine x nine. The goal to complete the puzzle is quite simple. You must use the numbers 1-9 only once in each cube, once in each row, and once in each column.

Each Sudoku puzzle starts with some of the numbers already entered into the puzzle. Depending on how many numbers are pre-entered and the placement of these numbers determine the difficult level of the Sudoko puzzle. Ratings of difficulty very but are often rated from 1 start (easy) to 6 stars (very difficult). Some puzzle creators just call them light and easy, easy, moderately hard, very difficult etc. Other puzzle creators have applied far east martial art terms such as white belt, brown belt, green belt and black belt.

If you have never tried a Sudoko puzzle be sure to start with the easiest level you can find. If you buy a puzzle book they are clearly labeled. If you look in a daily newspaper you would normally find the easiest puzzles at the beginning of the week. Starting with an easy level will help you to develop your puzzle strategy in addition to not completely frustrating you as a very difficult puzzle may do.

The basic strategy that many people use is to go through each number and try to fill in as many of these as the puzzle allows by looking up and down the rows and columns to see where a number has to be placed. If you work your way up from number one through nine, be sure to consider going through this process again and the first time through may have determined some numbers not identifiable the first time through. Next look at the cubes to see which number in a cube may prevent that number from being used in a particular row or column you are trying to solve. Finally try to train your mind to see all nine squares in a row, column or cube. By doing so you will quickly be able to identify the missing number needed in each of these areas. Top Rated PS3 Games: Assassin’s Creed
Friday 7 September 2007 @ 8:57 pm

Assassin’s Creed is certainly one of the most impressive and exciting PS3 Games ever developed by Ubisoft. The same team, which created the outstanding and popular Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, spent two years in order to produce this visually stunning, stylish, and very original game. Assassin’s Creed offers a whole new level of gaming adventure with its awesome lifelike animation, freer movement of the characters, good graphics and sound, and other special features like you’ve never seen before in other PS3 Games.

A quick look at Assassin’s Creed might remind you of other recent and top rating PS3 Games. For, this game boasts of an incredibly controllable hero and an almost lifelike animation just like the Prince of Persia. Moreover, the game has an astounding medieval setting, a visually stunning lifelike cityscapes, and an open-ended game play that is very similar to that of Oblivion. The ps3 game also reminds us of the Thief series for its resourceful, independent, and inconspicuous hero as well as the anti-medieval-establishment background. Then, the open-ended sandbox world of Assassin’s Creed is also comparably with Grand Theft Auto. Amidst certain similarities with other games, Assassin’s Creed is still a standout with its surprising twists and it’s creative and beautifully designed visual style. All these features add to the uniqueness of the game.

“Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.” And so goes the creed of the assassin. These words suggest that anything is possible during the entire game. This exciting and action-packed adventure is set in the late 12th century during the Third Crusade under the leadership of Richard Lionheart. Here, you play as Altair, the fearless and powerful assassin armed with a sword, a wrist blade, and crossbows. The hero is surrounded by aggressive threats in all places and yet he can destroy them all instantly with his fast and cunning counterattacks to his enemies. Assassin’s Creed, indeed, is one of the PS3 Games worth playing.

The people’s reaction to Altair is another thing, which sets apart Assassin’s Creed from the rest of the PS3 Games. While the hero is busy fighting or demonstrating his skills and tactics, you could see the people around visibly frowning or raising their eyebrows as they watch him. A perfect example for this is the scene where Altair attacks a random civilian. As the victim drops to the ground, the villagers stand in shock while others run away from the place screaming.

You might be wondering where the hero’s name comes from. Altair is an Arabic word, which means “the flying eagle.” Indeed, the developers of the game made sure that the character would really live up to his name. If you want to find out why, just watch Altair’s rapid and swift movements each time he faces his opponents. He projects a cool attitude even in the middle of a big fight. Altair is distinct from other heroes in PS3 games with the fact that his movements look so real and good to the players. The game’s animation is simply visually stunning and lifelike. Assassin’s Creed is truly one of the best PS3 Games ever created by Ubisoft. The whole adventure is worth checking out.

The Nature of PDA Game Addiction
Sunday 2 September 2007 @ 5:06 pm

PDA gaming can become inconvenient.

In an attempt to wean myself off of the Bejeweled 2 puzzle game on my iPAQ 4150, I decided to switch to Age of Empires, merely for research purposes, of course.

Insidiously, my proclivity towards Pocket PC game addiction reared its ugly head once again. It all began when I started playing Age of Empires during commercials while taking in Global News.

As it turns out, Bejeweled 2 had fewer negative repercussions on the domestic front as my wife Jessie has taken to dropping the occasional snide remark about my Pocket PC gaming.

This occurred most recently while conducting a Macedonian assault involving armoured elephants and long sword infantry.

I suspect that the novelty of pausing and rewinding live TV with our Rogers-supplied PVR has become annoyingly stale for her.

It’s considered somewhat sacrilegious when Dr. House has been paused midway through delivering a sarcastic quip to a terminally ill patient.

At work, I failed to notice that my desktop PC had frozen during compilation of a quarterly report until half an hour had elapsed, forcing me to produce some deft pretexts when my manager stopped by on a so-called spontaneous visit to my cubicle.

PDA puzzle games usually involve short, quick plays, making for an all-season type of Pocket PC game convenience.

Mounting a real-time Pocket PC strategic assault means having to pay a bit more attention to the big picture, lest you get cut down by an enemy AI civilization rampage on the hardest difficulty level.

My iPAQ has provided more than enough blissful distractions during daily commutes to earn my own, personal award for The Ultimate Gaming Platform that also reminds me of mundane errands, meetings and contact phone numbers.

It’s too bad RTS Pocket PC gaming and work don’t mix well.

My diet will consist largely of Jawbreaker and Bejeweled staples for the time being. Away from work it’ll be a different story.

Well, back to preparing my final AoE assault.

Not Just A Game It’s An Adventure
Friday 17 August 2007 @ 2:08 am

Getting in the game is just that. As a game player my self I can find no other joy as close to the hart as being in the game. It is a felling of excitement and an overwhelming thrill to compete against some minds that are way above the average mind.Or just well trained I should say.

What happens when I get in the game is really like a second nature and my mind just takes over and the competitive nature in me is totally peeked. I can start playing a game on line against some brilliant players and get so immersed that before I know it five or more hours has gone by. It gets that intense. And when I am done playing my mind is working at a higher performance of awareness. For quite a while after I get out of the game.

I would really have to say that because of the intense gaming programs and the greatly advance technology. And add into the mixed some absolutely brilliant opponents. That being in the game is actually a very good way to heighten the senses. Really it’s quite the therapeutic training.

Think about it the military has been using the gaming programs for training purposes for years. Why? Because the simulations are so in depth that there people will benefit from the heightened awareness, of any situations that may accrue. It just would stand to reason that if the game is being used for that reason in the military. Then the game can do the same thing outside of the military.

There are some games that don’t offer this type of mind stimulation. But those games are for the slow started the unenthusiastic gamer. Used for the sole purpose of getting them started.

It’s really the action games and some of the high tech roll playing games. That are what I call the mind openers. The brain teasers if you will. They are the games that offer more value then just enjoyment. Think about it if you are an intense gamer. Someone who likes to play these butt kicking ground pounding hart throbbing eye opening action packed games. Then you have probable honed your skills, and really increased or heightened your awareness up to a pretty high level. So how dose that help you or use when you’re away from your game. Well the one most important place I would have to say is driving. If you have a heightened sense of awareness wouldn’t that make you a better defensive driver? I think so. Wouldn’t a heightened sense of awareness give you the upper hand in a situation that’s going on around you. A situation that you should be aware of? I think so too.

If you are one of these brilliant gamers that I have had the pleasure of going head to head with, and are a student or a teen in school. All I have to say is bravo and thank you for the intense gaming in the game. But please remember that the game is just a game. You should never let the game come between you and your ability to advance quite far in this world that is also very competitive in its on game. Use your abilities that are greatly advanced, and take the time to increase your learning and knowledge. So that you may have a better chance of gaining greater things then you could ever imagine. In this game, in the real world that is known as life. Believe me if you are one of those brilliant players then you have the ability to adapt and advance far in this world. Use the tools at your disposal to achieve the same level of greatness in the game of the world as you have achieved in the game it self

Robert Emler: I too enjoy the trill of the game and have benefited from the gaming experience. I have a Harley and really Like to ride it a lot. Being in the game has given me a heightened awareness of my surroundings when I ride. That has saved my life more then a few times. I would have to say that if where not for my enjoyment of gaming my sense of awareness would not be what it is today. http://extreamgamers.com. Eliminate Sudoku Frustration
Thursday 2 August 2007 @ 7:37 am

Every person who has ever done the Sudoku puzzle over time has at some point become frustrated. You get to a situation where you just can’t see any headway. There seems to be no clues as where to go next. And I know from personal experience that staring blankly at the puzzle waiting for a solution to hit you between the eyes just never happens. There are two keys to getting past the frustration.

The first key is to understand the thinking of the Sudoku creator or puzzle writer (or what ever you want to call him). He wants you to get frustrated. That is his goal. Depending on what level of Sudoku you are attacking he will use a different number and variety of tricks and roadblocks to make it difficult to find the final solution. When your level of frustration rises, so does his level of satisfaction. Conversely when you get to a roadblock or dead-end and you know that this is part of his plan, then it is easier to stay calm and find the solution.

The second key is to have a plan of attack or strategy for these roadblocks. Just knowing that they are there is fine but not finding a solution can be very frustrating in itself. So having an orderly strategy you can use to find a way past the roadblock is imperative. If you remember the Rubik’s cube, it was very frustrating to solve. But once you could solve one face then the other five faces could be solved by repeated using just four sequences of moves. The difficult part was finding those moves but once found and remembered then the cube could be easily and repeated solved. For solving Sudoku, I personally use the dot-dish-dash technique. It is a combination of three overlaying marking strategies that enable anyone to solve any level Sudoku they wish to tackle. I am sure there are people of high enough IQ that they can solve the hardest Sudoku in their head without any markings on the page at all. I am, unfortunately, blessed with only an average IQ and therefore use the marking to help me to a solution. The dot-dish-dash markings are relatively unobtrusive, easy to implement and interpret.

Now when I get to a roadblock I see it as the challenge of me against the puzzle maker. And with a good strategy its not whether I can break down the strategy of the puzzle maker but how fast and cleanly I can do it?
