Purchasing an Inexpensive PC
Monday 15 October 2007 @ 10:30 pm

Personal computers have become relatively inexpensive, at least as compared to what they used to cost. There are now many sources for inexpensive PCs. This article will provide you with information on sources for low-cost personal computers, computer peripherals, and accessories.

The average home computer user does not necessarily need the latest and greatest technology. Most simply need a PC with a relatively new Intel processor, or equivalent; a reasonable amount of memory - 256MB or more; a reasonable amount of disk space - 20GB or more; a CD, DVD or CDRW; and a modem and networking capability. It is only individuals with demanding needs such as intensive gaming, or video or image manipulation that really need more. Individuals who store large libraries of picture or graphics files, music files, or video files will require substantially more disk space.

Before shopping, you need to get a clear idea of what your PC needs are and in what timeframe you are going to need a new PC. If your need for a PC is immediate, then you must try to find the best deal from a local electronics retailer. In addition, if you need or must have the latest, most “cutting-edge” technology, you can expect to pay handsomely. While in either case you may be able to find a relatively good deal, you will have probably paid more than if you can wait five plus business days for shipping and give up a little on the technology curve.

For individuals who do not need a PC immediately, and who are not looking for the “latest and greatest” technology, there are many excellent sources for inexpensive PCs, peripherals, and computer accessories. In many cases, PCs can be found for under $400, and even under $300. Sources for low-cost PCs include:

  • On-Line Retailers
  • On-Line Refurbished Equipment and Outlet Stores
  • On-Line Auctions

On-Line Retailers

There are many excellent on-line retailers such as TigerDirect (www.TigerDirect.com) and TechDepot (www.TechDepot.com) who can provide substantial savings on PCs, peripherals, and accessories. On-line retailers also typically have huge inventories including components, and consumer electronic items such as digital cameras, PDAs, and MP3 players. The lowest cost PCs may be factory close-outs (PCs being replaced by more current technology) or reconditioned/refurbished (good as new, but not new). They will work fine and be more than adequate for most average home-computing needs.

On-Line Refurbished Equipment and Outlet Stores

Many computer vendors and retailers also have factory outlet stores and/or refurbished equipment outlets. Again, although not the latest technology, or even brand new, these PCs will meet most computing needs and will be much less expensive. Refurbished equipment/outlet retailers include:

  • Amazon.com - Amazon.com has an “Outlet, Used & Refurbished” store that can be found under the “Computers” category. Here they offer both clearance items and refurbished items at substantial savings.
  • Dell Outlet - Dell has an outlet store that offers savings on Dell desktop and laptop computers, as well as other Dell accessories and electronics, including monitors, printers, handhelds, and TVs. Select “Home & Office” on the main page of the Dell Site (www.Dell.com) and then scroll down to find “Dell Outlet”.
  • Gateway Remanufactured Products - Gateway offers outlet prices on remanufactured Gateway desktops and laptops. Select “Remanufactured” on the Gateway site (www.gateway.com).
  • HP Outlet Store - Hewlett-Packard offers outlet pricing on HP desktops, laptops/notebooks, monitors, printers, cameras, and televisions. Select “Outlet” on the main page of the HPShopping site (www.shopping.hp.com) to find their offering of products.
  • IBM - IBM offers IBM Certified Used Equipment that has been refurbished and tested to IBM specifications. Offered items include desktop PCs, notebooks, printers, monitors, and parts and accessories. Enter “refurbished PC” into the search bar of the IBM site (www.IBM.com) to find what they have to offer.
  • Iomega - The Iomega factory outlet offers excellent prices on Iomega removable disk drives, portable disk drives, internal and external disk drives, flash drives, DVD, and CDRW drives. Select “Outlet” off of the main page on the Iomega site (www.iomega.com).
  • TechDepot - TechDepot offers both clearance items and refurbished items off of their site (www.TechDepot.com). Select either the “Clearance” or the “Refurbished” tabs on their home page to find what they have to offer.

On-Line Auctions

Perhaps requiring the most patience and persistence are the on-line auction sites. For those with the right temperament, good deals on PCs and related products can be found at eBay and at CompUSA Auctions.

Conclusion

With a little research, time, and persistence, you should be able to save a substantial amount of money on PCs and PC related items from any of the above named sources. While what you get may not be the latest technology, or new, it should meet the demands of all but the most advanced PC users.

Reducing Hypertension (high blood pressure) Naturally
Monday 15 October 2007 @ 10:20 pm

Hypertension is commonly known as high blood pressure. A healthy young adult resting blood pressure should be around 120/80 mmHg, blood pressure rises with age, a typically healthy 50 year old should have blood pressure reading of 150/90 mmHg at rest. Hypertension (high blood pressure) is diagnosed when the blood pressure is constantly above 160/95 mmHg at rest.

The contributing factors to hypertension (high blood pressure) are kidney and hormonal disease, a genetically predisposed family history to high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, high consumption of dietary salt (sodium chloride), low dietary calcium, depletion in magnesium, obesity, low intake of potassium salts, a high consumption of sugar , high alcohol consumption, high consumption of caffeine especially in beverages such as tea and coffee, smoking, high saturated fats intake, consumption of liquorice, non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, the taking of the contractive pill, toxic material such as lead and cadmium, food allergy, lack of exercise and stress.

Usually, hypertension (high blood pressure) is without symptoms but typical symptoms of hypertension (high blood pressure) which are reported are feeling dizzy, tired and having headaches. If hypertension (high blood pressure) is left unchecked then blood vessels in the eyes, kidneys, heart and brain can become damaged causing serious conditions such as impaired eyesight, kidney failure, heart attacks and strokes. A man with hypertension (high blood pressure) in his 40’s is 30 times more likely to have a stroke than a man not suffering from hypertension (high blood pressure).

Changing your dieting and lifestyle can reduce the health risks associated with hypertension (high blood pressure). Avoid salt, excess alcohol, caffeine, stress and quit smoking, keep to a low fat, low cholesterol diet which is high in fresh organic fruit and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, this should provide plenty of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, potassium and fibre, take up regular exercise, if overweight try to loss it and try not to reuse vegetable oil for frying.

Supplements that have shown good results in reducing hypertension (high blood pressure) are Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), fish oil, garlic tablets and potassium.

The following supplements may help if you are suffering from hypertension (high blood pressure)

Achillea wilhelmsii

Coenzyme Q10

Evening primrose oil

Fibre

Fish oil (EPA/DHA)

How to Survive Seventh Grade
Monday 15 October 2007 @ 8:00 pm

Seventh grade: it’s a world of homework, angst over your social life, homework, clubs, and more homework. You’re not the smallest, but you still have to look up to those 8th-graders. So what’s a seventh-grader to do? Keep reading and find out.

1) Think about all your homework for the evening, and prioritize it. What must you absolutely do tonight? What stuff is due in two days? Then, get home, and do the first thing on your list first (who would’ve thought?). Then do something for you that takes less than ten minutes: check your email, listen to a few songs, etc. Then do the second thing on your list. Keep doing that until you have it all done (or at least most of it!).

2) Don’t cram. Anyone who’s ever taken a test before knows this: 99.9% of the pressure gets taken off if you don’t cram. Instead, start studying at least three days before. And now, the three all important studying rules:
Make sure you know what’s going to be on the test (simple, but how annoying is it when you take it and say, ‘We had to study THAT?’) If you like to study with your friends, make sure you really are STUDYING, and not just hanging out.

3) Don’t cheat. You can get caught, and if you cheat, it obviously means you don’t know the stuff, and then if any of it shows up on the next quiz, you’ll have to cheat again, increasing the chance of getting caught and sending you into a cycle of guilt and… bad things.

4) Find really awesome friends, even if it takes awhile. Social life varies so much, especially when you have these girls who trade friends like shirts. If you are in a group of friends who you don’t love now, think how much it will suck in high school.

5) Get involved in extracurricular activities. Sometimes, people don’t join because it’s ‘uncool’. Listen, there’s no logic in that. If the people who say that aren’t your friends, why do you care what they say anyway? And if they are - well, they sure don’t sound like good friends. Make sure you’re not so busy, though, that you can’t find time to do the most important thing: your homework.

6) Have fun (while maintaining your grades).

7) If you’re having bully issues, then do something about it. If it makes you cry, you have to tell an adult. If it is small, but it hurts, tell your parents. Just because they are the most pathetic excuses for human life you have ever seen dosen’t mean they can’t help.

8) If you don’t have self-esteem, get some. You are smart, pretty (or handsome), talented and you rock! No more lame excuses!

Make me billionaire - The Rich Jerk
Monday 15 October 2007 @ 4:25 pm

……Wouldn’t it be nice to make a lot of money quickly, with
minimal effort, working at home in your pajamas? Of course it
would. I for one would love to have money flowing into my bank
account, working only a few hours a week from home, so I’d have
more time to spend with my husband, without any boss looking
over my shoulder. Whether it’s real estate investing, selling by
classified ads, stock market investing, internet affiliate
marketing, or something else, we’ve all seen the fantastic
claims people make about making tons of money, AND how they can
show you how to do the same thing. I can tell you right now that
99% of these people are total frauds. You may have even fallen
prey to one of these scam artists, selling you their latest “get
rich quick” program. Me too. I’ve bought so many of these
programs that I can’t even recall how many. I don’t know why,
but I tend to find the “good” in people, and I was “sold” by
these marketing schemes time and time again, even after being
scammed by another. Finally, after so many disappointments, I
got FED UP. I decided to get to the bottom of this fascination
we all have with get rich quick programs, and find out if there
really were any LEGITIMATE programs for making money. I
literally contacted the administrator of every get rich quick
website I could find. Posing as an investor,I managed to
convince the owners that I was seriously interested in
purchasing their entire website and business. That way, once the
dollar signs flashed in their heads, they would give me free
access to their member’s areas to review what I would be
“buying”. Well, I was disgusted with 99% of what I found. Many
of the owners actually boasted about how many people bought
their useless programs. I repeatedly found: * outdated
information * non-working links * links leading to other sites
that asked for more money * no help section * no real email
support * no refunds

I quickly realized that these so-called Get Rich Quick programs
were totally useless. And the owners knew it, yet they were
laughing all the way to the bank! Needless to say, I didn’t
respond when they asked if I was still interested in buying
their websites. Surprisingly, while sifting through all of the
scam artist’s websites, I was able to locate an individual that
actually ran legitimate programs. Table of Contents The owners
were every day people like you and me that found a way to make
extra money working from home on their computers using the
internet. Their membership areas were impressive, with a good
amount of quality information on how to make a lot of money per
day on your computer doing very little work. I even chatted with
a few of their customers in several online forums, and they
verified that they were making extra money through the sites. It
was like I found a few diamonds in the rough. But don’t take my
word for it, you can visit the website below. See what you
think. They do charge a minimal fee for access to their program
(electronic PDF book, discounted just during these days!), which
is to be expected for any legitimate company that actually has
people on staff who are dedicated to helping you get started.
Anyway, if you do decide you are interested in the program below,
I advise you to join quickly, as the owners have informed me
that they are getting so many new members by word of mouth
referrals, that they will be closing off membership completely
in the next 7 days. (By the way, you didn’t hear this from me!)
They don’t have a large enough staff to accommodate many more
people, and they are dedicated to providing excellent service to
each person. Well, my search for legitimate Get Rich Quick
programs has come to an end. I have to say I was thoroughly
disappointed with most of what I found, and I strongly advise
that you do not take chances joining any programs other than the
one listed
below!

Immune Support Products and Why We Need Them
Monday 15 October 2007 @ 2:11 pm

What is Colostrum?
Colostrum is the pre-milk fluid produced from the mother’s mammary glands during the first 72 hours after birth. It provides life-supporting immune and growth factors that insure the health and vitality of the newborn.

Why do we need Colostrum?
As we age, we notice it takes us a little longer to fight off a cold or flu, we become more vulnerable to disease, our energy and enthusiasm lessen, our skin loses its elasticity, we gain unwanted weight and lose muscle tone. After maturity, we gradually lose the immune and growth factors in our body. This impacts us to search for anti-aging and health products and knowledge. We’ve looked to plants and minerals for an answer, isolating and mega-dosing on vitamins and minerals. Aging, illness and death occur with the loss of immune and growth factors in our bodies. Medical science has shown in many published reports worldwide that these can possibly be replaced in the human body….with bovine colostrum.

Bovine colostrum is not new. In India, for thousands of years, Ayurvedic physicians and the spiritual leaders have documented the physical and spiritual health benefits from colostrum. It is dried and delivered by the milkman and is known for its healing and therapeutic ability. Scandinavian countries have been making a delicious colostrum pudding and dessert topped with honey, for hundreds of years, to celebrate the birth of calves and good health. It was used in the US as an early antibiotic that was in much favor until the discovery of penicillin and other antibiotics.

In the late 18th Century, Western scientists began to study colostrum and document its benefits for survival, growth and development for the newborn. Today, there are thousands of published scientific and clinical studies of major health benefits associated with colostrum.

What is Lactoferrin?
Lactoferrin helps increase natural iron bio-availability, is a powerful antioxidant, and helps support a healthy immune system.

• Lactoferrin is an iron-binding glycoprotein found in human secretions like tears, saliva, milk and mucous

• Helps enhance iron transport and absorption

• Helps promote a healthy balance of natural intestinal flora

• Helps increase bioavailability and absorption of nutrients in the body and helps decrease the bioavailability of iron to pathogens

• May have anti-aging properties by helping prevent the formation of free radicals that trigger oxidation

• Helps contribute to host defense against pathogens by protecting lymphocytes against free iron

What are plant sterols?
Plant sterols are extracts of certain plants that, when ingested, inhibit the absorption of cholesterol in the small intestine. Thus, dietary cholesterol never gets into the system.

Plant sterols are present naturally in small quantities in many fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, cereals, legumes, vegetable oils, and other plant sources. Plant stanols occur in even smaller quantities in many of the same sources. Both stanols and sterols are essential components of plant cell membranes and structurally resemble cholesterol. Foods supplemented with plant sterols may reduce cholesterol and are a promising addition to interventions aimed at lowering heart disease risk.

Not All HAMS Are Edible
Monday 15 October 2007 @ 1:09 pm

Its true, not all HAMS are edible. Some hams are actually useful radio amateur operators who serve the public and have fun making friends. Ham radio operators (or amateur radio operators as they are known) use two-way radio stations from their homes, cars, boats and outdoors to make hundreds of friends around town and around the world. They communicate with each other using voice, computers, and Morse code. Some hams bounce their signals off the upper regions of the atmosphere, so they can talk with hams on the other side of the world. Other hams use satellites. Many use hand-held radios that fit in their pockets. In the 20 plus years I have been a General Class Operator I have been afforded the opportunity to make hundreds of new friends thru this great hobby of ours while being afforded an opportunity to serve my community in a variety of ways.

Much of this hobby in electronics and communications can be viewed by going to the amateur radio site called the Amercian Radio Relay League or ARRL at www.arrl.org.

Hams exchange pictures of each other using television. Some also like to work on electronic circuits, building their own radios and antennas. A few pioneers in Amateur Radio have even contributed to advances in technology that we all enjoy today. There are even ham-astronauts who take radios with them on the International Space Station and thrill thousands of hams on earth with a call from space!

Hams assist their communities and prospective agencies in times of need such as;

• Hurricanes

• Earthquakes

• Tornadoes and floods

• Motorist accidents

• Fires and chemical spills

• Search and rescues

The most popular license for beginners is the Technician Class license, which requires only a 35 multiple-choice question written examination. The test is written with the beginner in mind. Morse Code is not required for this license. With a Technician Class license, you will have all ham radio privileges above 30 megahertz (MHz). These privileges include the very popular 2-meter band. Many Technician licensees enjoy using small (2 meter) hand-held radios to stay in touch with other hams in their area.

Technicians may operate FM voice, digital packet (computers), television, single-sideband voice and several other interesting modes. You can even make international radio contacts via satellites, using relatively simple equipment.

Did you know may of todays TV and Music stars are amateur radio operators or Hams? Its true, Ronnie Milsap, Patty Loveless and many many more.

The 170,000+ members of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) are among the most active and enthusiastic amateurs in the country. Headquartered in Newington, CT, ARRL speaks on behalf of its members in Washington and internationally as well as providing direct member benefits.

The Amateur Radio license examinations are administered by ham radio volunteers. When you’re ready to take your exam, you’ll need to locate an exam session near you.

If you have questions on becoming a Technician class operator please feel free to leave me feed back or as I stated earlier, visit the Amercian Radio Relay League site at WWW.ARRL.ORG

Quick Guide to Computer Training
Monday 15 October 2007 @ 11:36 am

Computers and the Internet have come a long way since their
inception. Living in the computer age means adapting to new
technologies as they evolve. The ease and speed of communication
that computer technology provides allows us to be more
productive in every facet of our lives. That technology requires
skilled computer professionals to design, maintain, and
implement it.

What is it? Computer training is divided into
specialties including: * Computer hardware * Computer software *
Computer networking * Web Development

Computer hardware refers to the actual physical components that
comprise computers (processors, modems, keyboards, motherboards
etc). Computer hardware engineers design, develop and maintain
computer hardware. They may oversee the installation and
manufacture of hardware. Due to the constant flux of the
industry, continued education is required to keep up with trends
and technology.

Computer software refers to the content that makes
a computer work. Software is divided into three categories:
Platform (such as operating systems i.e. Windows, Linux, and
Macintosh OSX), Applications (Microsoft Office, games), and
User-Written (templates, plug-ins, extensions). Computer
software engineers, like their hardware counterparts, are
required to continually learn new skills in conjunction with
developing technology.

Computer networking refers to communication between
a group or groups of computers. This includes LAN-local area
network, MAN-metropolitan area network and WAN-wide area
network. Computer network engineers work with software and
hardware integration across a system of computers and servers.
They deal with computer-to-computer interface and connect users
to each other via private as well as public networks.

Web development refers to the building and
implementation of websites (design, programming, server
configuration) - Web page design is a subset that deals with
user interface design, graphics, html and CSS (cascading style
sheets). Web page designers are behooved to have good art skills
as they will most likely be dealing with graphics, layout and
Flash applications.

Why do it? Other than the obvious passion for computers
and technology, salary and job growth potential are excellent
reasons to consider computer careers. Diversity of computer
skills adds to marketability in the workforce. Many employers do
not have time to train workers on basic skills and expect
employees to be more than familiar with computers.

Who should do it? If you have an aptitude or interest in
math, science or art, and have strong problem solving and
analytical skills you are a perfect candidate for a computer
related career. Computer careers can be solitary work, but often
require good communication skills. Systems administrators must
know how to relay information to clients and coworkers in order
to maintain order and efficiency in the system.

Education is available in many varieties; from certifications,
certificate programs, associate’s degree programs, bachelor’s
and even master’s degree programs. Many professionals receive
degrees in computer science and related fields, but still others
are required to have specific certifications (for example
MCSE-Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer or MCSA-Microsoft
Certified Systems Administrator). Many industries do not require
these specific certifications, only knowledge and experience of
computer systems. When making a decision about education,
research the jobs that interest you and find out just what the
employers are looking for in a candidate. Why spend four years
working on a bachelor’s degree when a shorter certificate
program may be all you need?

Where can I find out more? For more information on
careers, training, and working conditions see the Occupational
Outlook handbook at the US Bureau of Labor Statistics site.

Panic Attacks: Effective Ways to Cope
Monday 15 October 2007 @ 10:55 am

Jill is a 21 y/o college student who used to do well until about
a few months ago when she started to experience “weird” attacks
almost daily. She described her experience as “horrible.” When
she has the attack, she feels that she’s about to die or develop
a stroke.

One day while she was in a mall, she suddenly developed an
“overwhelming” sensation all over her body. She was sweaty and
tremulous and felt that her heart was pumping so fast. Within a
few seconds, she also suffered from chest pain and shortness of
breath. This episode lasted for about 10 minutes but she felt
that this was her worst ten minutes of her life.

Overwhelmed by her experience, she has stayed away from malls
and has avoided being in a crowd of people. Because of the
frequency of the attacks, Jill can’t anymore function normally.
She is afraid to leave the house and go to work.

Jill’s experience is typical of someone with Panic Disorder. A
person with panic disorder develops anxiety attacks associated
with the thought that he or she would die or develop a stroke or
heart attack. Physical changes such as fast heart beat,
shortness of breath, fainting episodes, sweating and
tremulousness are some of the accompanying symptoms.

A typical episode usually comes “out of the blue” and not
precipitated by any triggers. It can therefore happen any time
and anywhere. An attack can last for a few to several minutes.

One episode can make a person feel scared of having another one.
In fact, a lot of people feel distressed anticipating the
occurrence of another attack. So most individuals prefer to stay
at home and isolate themselves from friends, co-workers, and
even relatives. Eventually they become incapacitated.

If you’re like Jill, is there any treatment that can help?

Yes, there is. Individuals with this condition are successfully
treated with an antidepressant such as the serotonin-reuptake
inhibitors. Usually, the dose should be started low, for
instance 10 mg/day of citalopram. After a few weeks, the dose
should be gradually increased depending upon the person’s
clinical status.

Cognitive behavior therapy is likewise very effective. This type
of “talk psychotherapy” helps the individual to restructure his
or her thinking. Negative cognition associated with the illness
should be addressed in therapy because it creates more harm than
good. Relaxation techniques such as breathing exercises should
also help.

During treatment, patience is very important because it takes a
while before any intervention helps. However, don’t despair.
After a few weeks, the medication should start working and
should give you a feeling of comfort.

What’s the role of benzodiazepines (e.g. lorazepam or
clonazepam) in the treatment of panic disorder? This type of
drug can provide acute relief but should be used only on a
short-term basis because of its addiction potential. For
long-term treatment, antidepressants and psychotherapy are still
preferable.

Public Domain - Internet Gold Mine
Monday 15 October 2007 @ 2:02 am

With the advent of the internet and the ease of which information can readily be downloaded and compiled you would think that more people would realize that the public domain is a source of wonderful wealth that can be tapped into for huge profits.

I have spent the last 4 years “discovering” little known secrets of this information that is readily available to those who know where to look. Or should I say “prospect”. That’s exactly what it is. It’s Mining. When you mine the internet, you are not mining little rocks in a quarry or dredging a cold river looking for that elusive nugget of gold. You are searching for the gold of the future, and of the past. Information becomes your ore. You now become an information prospector. A “Millennium-Age Gold Miner.”

The tools of your trade are much different today than in the days of old. Your “pick-axe” has evolved into your mouse, and your “gold pan” is your hard drive. Your computer is the dredge and your internet connection is your “claim”. In the old days when a prospector found gold he would drive a stake in the ground and this would become his claim. You are doing the same thing when you sign the contract for your internet connection. You are staking a claim to the largest source of wealth in the world. Public Domain Information.

You transcend the boundaries of the physical world by entering a realm in which it is possible to find riches in the deepest recesses and crevices of the web. The public domain is the undiscovered country of the information age. It’s mysteries are deep as oceans and it’s knowledge as expansive as the universe. The public domain now becomes ultimate natural resource.

Information has always reigned king since the beginning of time. There are millions of us who know not the sheer power and value of the information that is freely available to anyone who knows where to look.

The new millennium, and the information-age is very much like the GoldRush of 1849 in which hundreds of thousands of people rushed westward in a stampede of gold seeking pioneers. Some were young, some old, some in between, but all sought a common goal. Gold. Only this time it is different, the gold we seek in this age is information, and it’s not mere thousands, but hundreds of millions people who are on this new quest blazing new trails and forging great new paths to wealth.

Information is abundant and widely available. You can mine this gold at anytime, from any place in the world. You do not have to travel vast distances facing the perils of the land to stake your claim. All you need is a computer and a connection to the web. From anywhere in the world you are able to seek out, find, download, and refine your treasure from the warm and cozy comfort of home.

Never before, in the history of man have you been able to procure such wealth so quickly. You are able to locate information on any subject in an instant, and your results are displayed before you faster than you could have ever imagined.

Your “gold pan” quickly become full of the valuable information-ore. Each time you find a nugget it motivates you to find more. You become entranced with the new found riches and it almost becomes obsession. The desire to find more pulses through your veins like a hot drug, steadily increasing your craving for more. The more you find the more you want. It the realization becomes obvious that you have “Gold-Fever” and now you can’t stop searching for more information.

This is what the public domain is. It’s an internet goldmine chock full of free information ready for the taking.

Stake your claim!
