Spam, What is It Good For, Absolutely Nothing!
Sunday 30 September 2007 @ 11:30 pm

Unsolicited Commercial Email (UCE), or spam has reached epidemic proportions, and continues to grow. According to American Online, of the estimated 30 million email messages each day, about 30% on average was unsolicited commercial email. As a result of its very low marginal costs, spam has become extremely prolific. Regardless of how many emails are sent out, the spammers’ costs are low, and constant. With numbers like these, there is a tremendous burden shifted to the Internet Service Provider (ISP) to process and store that amount of data. Huge volumes of this junk may undoubtedly contribute to many of the access, speed, and reliability problems suffered by many ISPs. Further, many large ISPs have experienced major system outages as the result of massive junk email campaigns. Spam is an issue about consent, not content. Regardless of whether the UCE message is an advertisement, porn, or a winning lottery notice, the content is irrelevant. If the message was sent unsolicited, and in bulk then the message is spam.

This junk e-mail is more than just annoying; it costs Internet users, and Internet-based businesses millions, even billions, per year. When a spammer sends an email message to a million people, it is carried by numerous electronic systems on route to its destination. The systems in between are bearing the burden of carrying advertisements, and other unsolicited junk for the spammer. The number of spams sent out each day is truly overwhelming, and each one must be handled efficiently, and expeditiously by many systems. There is no justification for forcing third parties to bear the load of unsolicited advertising. Ultimately, these costs are passed on to YOU, the consumer.

Spam originates in one of two ways, it is sent directly by the spammer from and under their control, or via illegal third party exploitation such as open proxies or open relays. Spammers get your address in a variety of ways. If you sign up for, and provide your email address, these seemingly friendly sites can turn around and sell your email to advertisers. Additionally, if you have your email address on a Web page, it is easy for unscrupulous advertisers to “harvest” it, and add you to their lists.

There are ways to reduce the number of spam messages, however it is presently impossible to stop them all. Spam filters, are software applications that redirect emails based on the presence of certain common phrases, or words. These automated measures are prone to being defeated by clever spammers. Additionally, there is a risk of important emails being deleted as spam. In 2003, Congress passed a sweeping law, CAN-SPAM act of 2003, which basically prohibits the use of deceptive subject lines and false headers in all emails. Additionally, the FTC is authorized (but not required) to establish a do-not-email registry. The CAN-SPAM Act took effect on January 1, 2004.

Spam is based on theft of service; it wastes time, money, and other resources. Spam can and will overwhelm your electronic mail box if it isn’t fought. Over time, unless the growth of spam isn’t stopped, it will destroy the usefulness and effectiveness of email as a communication tool.

    Organize Your Office Space
    Sunday 30 September 2007 @ 10:13 pm

Are you frustrated with your office space? Do you hunt for a pen
every time you put one down? Is the search for documents a
half-day event? Is your paper filed chronologically - working
your way down the pile to ‘one week ago’ and unable to pull out
‘four months ago’ for fear of a paper flood catastrophe? Every
office deals with an excess of paper and whether large or small,
your business is suffering when you aren’t operating in an
organized space. So, how do you clear the clutter and gain
control? SPACE IS ESSENTIAL The biggest problem with staying
organized in an office is that people set up a system and don’t
give themselves enough room to grow. If you have spent the
better part of a day cleaning out a drawer and replacing the
items in organized, labeled files, but you can’t squeeze a
single extra sheet of paper you’ve wasted your time and the
unfiled papers will grow again. Be certain to have at least a
quarter to a third (more if possible) of growing room when
implementing a system. You may need to change over at some
point, but having some extra space will encourage you to keep up
with the organizing. This also goes for items such as
architectural drawings or other products or documents you may
accumulate. Set aside time to purge unnecessary documents. Not
only will this provide more space but will save you time that
would otherwise be wasted looking through worthless paperwork.
SIMPLE FILING SYSTEM Do not make your system too complicated or
it will be hard to follow through. Color coding can be the
easiest if you do not have too many categories. This is
effective for systems which only require ‘Income’, ‘Expense’,
‘Projects’, ‘Correspondence’ or something similar. For filing of
large groups of clients, projects or invoices, use a single
drawer for each group of related files. A tall filing cabinet
can even be divided into alphabetical or chronological systems.
For items you refer to daily or even hourly you might consider a
posting board near your desk. This is a great idea for phone
number lists, ‘To Do’ lists and appointment calendars.
MAINTENANCE A filing system is only as good as the upkeep. You
may find it easier to have a small system of files located on or
near your desk and daily or weekly transfer the items into their
permanent home. This also works for items which you need close
at hand such as current project information or price lists etc.
STYLE OF FILING Consider if you can realistically maintain a
filing system. Perhaps labeled boxes would suit you better
(especially if you tend to pile papers). The key is to find
something you will feel comfortable maintaining. If papers are
sorted and occasionally purged, your system will work.
EVERYTHING NEEDS A HOME Everything MUST be assigned a home. By
giving each item a place you will not loose pens, cellphones,
glasses and so on. Don’t crowd the items or you will get
frustrated. Recognize that all of your efforts will help you run
your business more efficiently, and thus productively. Reward
yourself for keeping the system working!

What Do You Know About Childhood Depression?
    Sunday 30 September 2007 @ 10:11 pm

Depression in Children & Adolescents In America today, the word
depression is familiar to most people because of the frequency
with which it is seen and experienced among adults; however, in
recent it has been widely recognized and accepted that children
as well may experience this mood disturbance. It appears that
although childhood and adult depression are obviously similar,
they are not identical; childhood depression has an entity all
    its own.

Mood disturbances are normal for children, but when normal
patterns of eating, sleeping, working or playing are disrupted
by the intensity of mood, it is essential to try to discover and
treat the source of the problem. If left unattended, it may
become a seed bed for future depressive episodes of even greater
    intensity.

Depression may strike a young person of any age–infant to
    adolescent–affecting the physical, intellectual, emotional,
social and spiritual areas of his life; however, with proper,
loving care the problem is usually reversed and restoration to
normal childhood behavior occurs with a short period of time.

Do You Know . . . Symptoms of Childhood Depression While there
is no universally accepted diagnostic standard for depression in
children, several basic symptoms are accepted as identifiable
with the problem: - Sad or unhappy appearance - Antisocial
behavior - Desires to spend time alone in his room - Lack of
interest/ pleasure in normal activities - Lack of energy -
Frequent physical complaints - Feelings of being unloved or
rejected - Refusal to accept love or comfort - Low self-esteem -
Hyperactivity - Aggressive behavior - Sleep or appetite
disturbances - Separation anxiety - Severe anxiety -
Preoccupation with morbid ideas - Intense negativity - Problems
in school - Truancy (in teens) - Self-destructive behavior -
Forgetfulness - Difficulty in concentrating - Irritability seems
to be the most dominant symptom in children ages five through
    twelve.

Interestingly, the developmental level of the child seems to
have the greatest effect on the way clinical depression
manifests itself. Most of these symptoms may be seen in most
children at one time or another. When isolated and brief in
duration, the symptoms do not signal a serious problem but when
a cluster of them exists over a period of four or more weeks,
the presence of depression is indicated.

Causes of Depression in Youth This problem may result from
several causes. The primary sources are believed to be feelings
of being unloved or unwanted, and feelings of loss or of
rejection. These may be due to a divorce, separation, death of a
loved one or pet, or moving to a new location. Often the child
is misperceiving what is happening in his environment. Other
common causes include: inability to measure up to parental
    expectations; grief; emotional, physical or sexual abuse;
adjustment disorders; physical or spiritual problems.

Treatment Treatment usually includes working with the parents,
and often teachers, as well as the child or adolescent, in an
attempt to alter or correct conditions in the home, in the
classroom, or the social environment. This will usually
alleviate the depression. If not, it is necessary to work with
the family physician to investigate the possibility of an
underlying biological cause, such as allergies, a chemical
imbalance, a thyroid condition or the onset of puberty.

    Cable or DSL Broadband?
    Sunday 30 September 2007 @ 3:58 pm

I’ve been asked this question so many times I thought I’d put my thoughts down here for you to read. Let’s start by pointing out a couple things first. First off, depending on where you live, you may not have a choice of access. Satellite may be your only choice, which makes this null and void. Don’t fret, satellite is better than any dial-up and the contract lengths are generally 12-14 months in length. It will cost a bit more, given the extra equipment involved, but it certainly beats dial-up (if you can afford it).

Ok, on to the two major broadband access methods, cable and DSL. When I’m asked this question, I usually follow it with questions of my own.

1st. What type of internet surfing do you do? Are you a gamer, shopper, email user, web developer, music downloader, online video watcher, video editor or casual surfer?

2nd. How many computers will you have connected to the internet at one time?

3rd. Do you plan on ‘leveraging’ your broadband investment for home security or VoIP? (Voice over Internet Protocol is a method of making and receiving your phone calls using your broadband connection.)

When making your decision keep in mind that cable access, generally, cost more. The higher cost comes with the benefits of more speed. Up to 6 meg download, or the amount of information you can receive ‘down’ from the internet.

Loading web pages, listening to music online or watching video online are all impacted by your download speed. DSL is about 1.5 meg down in comparison. Not only does this impact ‘your’ surfing behavior, but if you plan to have more than 1 computer access the internet at the same time, keep in mind you’re ’sharing’ this connection. Sharing the connection means sharing that download ‘pipe’. (your internet connection) Uploading to the internet (file attachments in email, uploading web pages, etc. impact your upload speed. Cable upload speeds are around 384K while DSL is around 128K.

If you wish to leverage your investment in broadband by using VoIP, keep in mind that DSL is provided through the copper wires of your phone line. Having VoIP as a primary phone line without local phone service is very, very rare. This type of access is called ‘naked DSL’ and is not very common. We hope this will change in time, but for now, check with your local phone company. If you plan on leveraging your investment, check first.

So the answer to the question Cable or DSL is really all about your usage and what you’re willing to pay. Yes, cable is more expensive but it also comes with the additional benefits of faster speed and the ability to leverage your investment using VoIP as a primary phone service.

Lastly, when I’m asked what I personally use at home? I use cable broadband access and VoIP phone service. I’m very pleased with both and don’t plan on changing any time soon.

If you’re still unsure which is right for you, there are many web sites out there to provide you with additional information. Our site can help you as well so we hope to see you there!

    Happy surfing.

Things to Know About Fountain Pumps
    Sunday 30 September 2007 @ 3:03 pm

When replacing a fountain pump or choosing a new one, first
there are some key terms to keep in mind:

    “Head”:

This is the maximum vertical lift of the pump. For example, a 6′
head means the pump is rated to pump water up to 6 feet high.
Note, however, that at 6 feet the pump would be providing very
little water, with gallons per hour around zero. So if you need
to pump, say, 200 gph at 72″, you will probably need about a
300-600 gallon per hour pump to do the job. See a “pump curve”
for the amount of water pumped to various heights. Major pump
manufacturers like Cal Pump, Fountain Tech Pumps
Fountain Tech pumps, and others, include pump curves on their
boxes, brochures, or other literature. You should take a good
    look.

“GPH” : Gallons per hour, usually rated at different
heights “GPM” : Gallons per minute, usually rated at
different heights “Pump Curve”: The amount of water volume
“curved” according to various heights. A 500 gallon per hour
pump, for instance, might pump 500 gallons per hour at 0″ lift,
350 gallons per hour at 24″ of lift, and so forth. When buying a
pump for the first time or when seeking a replacement pump, it
is essential that you know how many gallons per hour you want to
pump and at what heighth (head). Water Volume: The total
volume that you will be pumping is controlled by a few factors.
One factor is the size of the pump, as covered above. But you
also must consider how wide your tubing will be. Tubing is
measured in two ways: inside diameter (i.d.) and outside
diameter (o.d.). Very skinny i.d. tubing will greatly reduce
water flow. Many customers are shocked when they find that,
after hooking up their 500 gallon per hour pump to ½” inside
diameter tubing, they are only getting what they consider a
trickle. Well, we had an engineer do some calculations for us to
illustrate the problem. Using a 300 gph pump with ½” tubing is
going to restrict your flow to 253 gallons per hour. By
increasing the pump to 450 gallons per hour, but still using ½”
tubing, you will increase volume only slightly, to 264 gallons
per hour! The lesson is this: When purchasing a pump, find out
what size of tubing is supposed to go with it. Another problem
is running the tubing too far. Long lengths of tubing create
resistance. If your pump calls for ½” i.d. tubing, for instance,
but you are running the tubing twenty feet from the pump, it is
a good idea to use ¾” tubing instead so as not to cut down too
much on flow. How much water do I need? What size of pump?

This question is answered in part by whether you want a
“trickle” or a roar. When you buy a fountain, you will usually
find a recommended flow. For waterfalls, use this as a rule of
thumb: for every inch of stream width or waterfall “sheet,” you
will need to deliver 100 gallons per hour at the height you’re
pumping. So if you are building a 12″ wide waterfall that is
three feet tall, you need to buy a pump that will be pumping
1200 gallons per hour at three feet of height. For ponds,
whenever possible, it is a good idea to recirculate the water
once an hour, more often if possible. Thus, if your pond is 500
gallons, try to buy a pump that will recirculate water at a rate
of 500 gallons per hour. For really large ponds, this is not
necessary and is far too expensive. For a nice waterfall effect,
we usually advise about 4000 gallons per hour or more at the top
of the waterfall. This creates enough volume for a wide,
crashing spill. Adjust stones to soften the splash if desired.
When Is an External Pump Appropriate?

“In-line” pumps provide the “most bang for the buck” in two
ways. For one, the purchase price is quite reasonable for the
high volume of water being pumped. But even more importantly,
these pumps dramatically outperform typical submersible pumps,
cutting electrical costs two to three times. Since electrical
costs for a large pond can easily run from thirty to one hundred
dollars a month, choosing the most energy-efficient pump is
tremendously important. However, if you need a lot of “head,”
that is, if you are pumping to a height of more than say, seven
or eight feet, or if you must pull the water (not “push”, for
in-line pumps push water fine but don’t pull well) a long
distance from the pond to a skimmer located far away, then these
pumps probably won’t work for you. How About Battery-Operated
    Fountain Pumps?

    Fountain Mountain,
Inc.receives many, many calls about battery-operated pumps.
While there are companies who manufacture pumps that can operate
on “A” and “AA” batteries, we have not found a battery-operated
pump that lasts or that is reasonably priced. For those
customers who need battery fountains for wedding centerpieces (a
common request), we suggest you buy as many as possible
battery-powered fountains at a store like Wal-Mart and remove
the pump from the fountain. You get the whole fountain for as
good of a price as we could get you these specialized pumps all
by themselves, and we don’t have to order 500 of them at a time!

    What About Solar Pumps?

Fountain Mountain, Inc. also receives many inquiries about solar
pumps. These are okay, but we have decided not to carry them
because of a few reasons. For one, these pumps, like
battery-operated ones, just aren’t so trustworthy; they don’t
last as long as a regular pump. For another, they go on and off
constantly depending on quality of sunlight, passing clouds,
etc. unless you buy one that works on batteries and solar. Then
you have to keep replacing batteries. Also, the ones that work
on both solar and batteries are expensive for the little bit of
water they will pump. Finally, what decided it for us was that
some companies allow credit card charges for all of their
products except for solar pumps. This means to us that the
companies are afraid of too many returns from customers.
Eventually, the technology might be there for us to sell them,
but we are not quite ready. Where is the Pump Made?

Pumps, like anything else, are made all over the world, and we
suggest you buy pumps from someone who will stand by a guarantee
and who has testing programs before marketing their pumps. It
used to be that Asian pumps were quite bad but this is changing.
What matters most is how well the pumps have been engineered and
the materials used in the production. Italy for quite a while
has been the major manufacturer of fountain pumps (think of how
long Italians have had fountains), but Germany, Korea, Taiwan,
and China are making pumps as well. Most American fountain pump
companies (for example, Cal Pumps and Beckett) have their pumps
manufactured overseas. As long as American engineering is used
and the plans are followed, this should not be a problem.

Should my Pump Have a 2-wire plug or a 3-wire plug?

Outdoor pumps should always use a grounded, 3-wire plug. Indoor
fountains sometimes have 2-wire and sometimes 3-wire plugs. For
people wanting a really thin cord, 2-wire pumps provide the more
aesthetic experience. Some retail stores require 3-wire pumps
even for indoor fountains (though, ironically, they might not
for aquarium pumps), and these thicker cords can be hidden by
plants, stones, or other decorations. All pumps must be
connected to a GFI outlet for safety.

Why do pumps burn out so often?

95% of the time the customer has let the pumps get hot by
running them dry. Most fountain pumps are water-cooled and once
the fountain is dry they burn up. Usually there is nothing you
can do about this other than to buy a new pump. Also, pumps are
supposed to be cleaned every so often by opening up the impeller
case on the fountain pump. Follow the manufacturer’s directions.

Red Bull, Does it Give You Wings?
    Sunday 30 September 2007 @ 2:50 pm

I was driving to work the other day, enjoying my obligatory glass of morning stimulant. This morning it was a can of Red Bull, I didn’t have time to stop at Starbucks, and I noticed that the primary ingredient in Red Bull is Taurine. After hearing their commercial on the radio, I got to thinking. How exactly does Red Bull work, and does it really give you wings? Does it give you more energy? Does it make you more alert?

Well, upon inspecting the ingredients and doing some research, which wasn’t hard working as a bulk vitamin distributor, I found that the Red Bull wings reference may be more geared to mental well being than to actual body energy. At least this may be the case with Taurine. As it turns out, Taurine is an amino acid that is used in our body for a number of activities. A couple of which are to act as a neural regulator, and to protect heart function. Substantial amounts of Taurine are also found in our eyes and stomach bile. There is no doubt that Taurine is beneficial, but I could not find any data that indicated it would give you an energy boost.

After searching and searching, I realized that the “wings” reference may be geared more toward your mental state. As I indicated, Taurine acts as a neural regulator. In fact, it is one of those chemicals in our brain that is responsible for a calm positive mood. Perhaps the wings effect is referring to the fact that the Taurine in Red Bull will make you calm and clear-headed. There has certainly been data to demonstrate that Taurine is effective when dealing with stress. Another ingredient that would indicate that the “wings” tag line may refer more to your mental state is the ingredient Inositol. This is another compound that has been shown to have a positive, calming, effect on your mood.

What about an energy boost? In looking at the ingredients, Caffeine certainly jumps out as a major stimulant. Other than that, sugar is always effective at providing a good short-term energy boost. These are probably the main ingredients that will make you more “vitalized.”

So does Red Bull give you “Wings?” Well, the Taurine and Inositol in it will certainly make you feel good. It has caffeine, so there should be a small energy boost, and the other compounds listed can help with your metabolism. Overall, it should have a positive effect on your body, and at least make you feel a little calmer and more energized. As for wings, well, what would we do with them if we had them anyway?

    Betting on Sportsbooks by sportsbooksgames.com
    Sunday 30 September 2007 @ 2:48 pm

Successful betting on sportsbooks, or successful handicapping
requires a substantial amount of homework and a systematic
approach to gambling and money management. Profitable gambling
on sportsbooks games has its price and you must be willing to
put in the time and research.

    Top Sportsbooks
will show you some of the things you’ll need to know to make
better picks and win more money this season.

    1. Always approach the sportsbooks games in terms of an entire
    season.

Don’t try to win big on one game and set your goals to win more
games than you lose over the long haul of an entire season. If
you are serious about success, you must make a plan and remain
disciplined. You should plan the proper bet size on each play or
game. You should never risk more than 5% of your bankroll on any
one play. I would guess that most of the sportsbooks gamblers
are wagering too much on each game and ask you not fall into
    that same trap.

    2. Narrow your weekly gambling choices down and make quality
    bets.

Narrow your weekly gambling choices down to no more than seven
games per week. It’s a rare week when more than a few games will
stand out as good gambling values. Find these games and you’ll
better your odds of winning more than you lose. Whatever system
you use for your sportsbook betting remember to keep it simple.
You don’t want to worry so much about how much each play is
worth and forget to handicap. If you want to be successful at
sports betting remember that money management will be important.

    3. Look for the best early moneyline and point spread values in
    the season.

Take advantage of early season point spread and money line value
before the odds makers have had a chance to catch up with which
teams are hot and which teams are not. During the early part of
a season, look for teams that are playing much better or worse
than expected to get your best value. Many novice handicappers
concentrate on how a team performed the previous year, but in
this era of salary cap constraints and constant roster turnover,
teams never perform at the same level in two consecutive years.
In addition, teams that performed well the previous year are no
longer a good value because you are laying a much higher price
with them, especially at the beginning of the next season. Start
your handicapping analysis before the season starts so you’ll be
ready to take full advantage of the first few weeks of the
    season.

    4. Find the best odds and gambling lines.

One last place to look for value is in the line itself. With
hundreds of online sportsbooks already in existence, and more
springing up every season, handicapping lines and point spreads
will vary from one sportsbook to the next. Having multiple
places to shop for the best lines offer bettors an extra point
on many games. A few extra wins that would have been pushes, and
pushes that would have been losses can make a huge difference in
a handicapper’s bottom line at the end of a season. A few
minutes of shopping around for one last chance of additional
value will make certain that you are getting the best odds for
    your gambling dollars.

    5. Use research not trends.

The first type of a sportsbook gambling method is where you
research as much as possible about the teams and the games
specifically, weigh all the relevant substantive factors as best
you can, and arrive at your best educated guess as to the likely
outcome. The key to this method is a lot of research. The more
informed your opinion or intuition is, the better. The second
method involves looking for specific trends that appear to hit
at a greater than chance rate, and then betting the games that
fit these trends. The overwhelming majority of such trends have
little or no predictive value whatsoever. One reason I say this
is because there are an infinite number of possible trends like
this, so of course you can always go back after the fact and
find as many as you want that have hit at a surprisingly high
percentage. But you want to identify the ones that will continue
to hit at that above chance percentage, and that is a very
elusive task. For all intents and purposes, ignore trends and
concentrate on trying to figure out who is the better team and
    by how much.

The right small appliance for you
    Sunday 30 September 2007 @ 11:18 am

Don’t let their name fool you. Small appliances can do a
multitude of tasks. Take the tears out of chopping onions with a
food processor or mini-chopper, mix bread dough with your food
processor, make fresh sauces in the blender - the list could go
on forever. How do you shop for small appliances? Price, brand,
ease of use, warranty, ease of maintenance? All of these are
important for sure. But the number one consideration should be
what works best for you. But always buy the most appliance that
you can afford, and those that will multi-task are always your
best solution. It’s like hiring a maid who does dishes, cleans
the sink, mops the floors, shines the wash basin, cleans the
toilet, the tub, makes the bed, vacuums the rugs, and oh ya, one
who does windows is a bonus.

Things to consider when buying small appliances: Determine your
cooking needs and wants - both current and future. Is your
family growing or growing up and moving out? Are you interested
in increasing your culinary endeavors? Are you wishing to
simplify and reduce time in the kitchen? Evaluate your kitchen
counter space, or space where you can keep these appliances.
Where are you going to put all those neat new appliances?

Check the height of the appliance compared to the height of your
cabinets. Some appliances that mount under the cabinet are
    available.

Decide what color appliance you prefer.

What style or look do you want? Modern or retro?

Determine the appliance capacity needed. The number of speeds
and settings on an appliance usually increases with the size of
the machine. Those who have large families or like to entertain
may choose to buy larger appliances.

Corded or cordless appliances. It’s your choice in many cases.
Corded models offer constant power; cordless gives you
portability but may also need constant recharging depending on
    the amount of usage.

Read the package before you buy to see if the appliance does
everything that you want it to.

Check you appliance for clean ability; is it easy to clean, or
hard? Are there going to be a lot of small parts that could get
    lost during this process?

Start by thinking of the needs of those who will be working in
the kitchen, from their physical requirements to the types of
food they will be preparing. Will the kids involved, or will it
be adults only. Some households will have very tall or very
short cooks. Still others will be using many small appliances to
assist with preparation. Think about keeping your options
flexible, as needs may very well change over time. The kitchen
is the most interactive room in the house. People, work
surfaces, appliances and tools all working together everyday to
produce meals that not only taste good, but will leave memories
for your family and friends to cherish for a lifetime. No room
in the home is more important than the kitchen, and no tools are
more important than the appliances that man it.

    Building Your Profitable Business List
    Sunday 30 September 2007 @ 10:45 am

Your business list is critical to the successful development of your business. All the successful “gurus” have lists that they market to and will agree that their databases are one of the main keys to their success.

Your business list can be built by these 3 methods.

    1. Your website:
    2. Direct marketing:
    3. Article distribution:

Your website: Here are some ways to capture email addresses by offering your visitors something free.

    · Email courses

    · Reports

    · E-books

    · A newsletter

Email courses: These can be 5-7 days in length. Find any hot topic that your specific market will be interested in, write a good-sized info tips article and break it down into 5-7 sections. Make each of these sections a lesson. Put your disclaimer at the top and a small ad for your
product, services or subscribing to your newsletter at the bottom and you are
    ready to go.

Reports: Again write an info article on a hot topic in your market. This time expand your article with more details and resources for your reader. The report should be at least 6 pages in length.

E-books: You can either write your own or get resale rights to one, or get one ghost written. This should again be on a highly interesting topic that your visitors will enjoy.

A newsletter: This is one of the best and most effective methods for building your list. Make sure that you publish a quality publication, with good informative content and less advertisements. Treat your subscribers well and they will become your loyal long-term customers. This may take 3 months or even as much as a year but your subscribers will come to trust you and when they do will buy from you.

    Direct marketing, using your newsletter.

    • Ad Swaps
    • Ads in other publications

Ad swaps: Can be very effective. As soon as your subscribers count reaches 1000 you will be able to swap ads with other publishers. Some of the best ads to swap are ones for your newsletter.

Ads in other publications: You can also place paid ads in other publications for your newsletter. Make sure the newsletter is related to your field.

    Article distribution:

    • Article swaps
    • Distribution

Articles swaps with other publications can be used to gain
new visitors and sign ups for your newsletter list. They will attract highly
targeted subscribers who will very likely become your long-term customers.

Article distribution is a very powerful way of bringing good warm ready to buy prospects to your subscriber list. If they like your article enough to click through to your site they will sign up for your newsletter and will be prime candidates for your offers.

More ways to build your list

Google Adwords is a service that enables you to reach clients looking for your services or
products. Here is how it works. It is like a Pay-Per-Click advertising, You pay when a user clicks on your advertisement. You can also use.

Business Forums: you cannot advertise here but you can ask, answer questions and post articles if allowed. Always leave your little sig and website address. Many people will come to your website when you remain active at these business forums and networks.

“Refer a Friend Link” on your website. Provide incentives so that visitors will be more inclined to refer your products and services. This “word-of-mouth” viral marketing can be
extremely valuable and generate future sales.

Give away free gifts like e-books and e-courses to encourage people to subscribe to your newsletter.

Make a landing page for your newsletter and point your direct marketing and
Pay-Per-Click advertising to it. This will be a mini sales promotional page for your newsletter. It will briefly explain the benefits of subscribing to your publication.

Monitor your list growth for maximum effectiveness:

Check what promotions are working and discard those that are not building your list. Duplicate successes and continuously test advertising. Think of your newsletter as a product and take your list building seriously. In this way you will continue to grow and develop your list for long-term profit.

Methods that will build but not make a responsive list: MLM style list building techniques may increase your list but not gain responsive subscribers. Buying subscribers will not always build a receptive list.

A good business list is not about numbers it is about responsiveness. It is pointless to have a large list and poor response. Make sure that every advertisement and promotion for your list is pointing specifically at your market. In this way you will build a truly profitable
    business list.
